Jer’Lisa J. Devezin is an artist and educator born and raised in the Lower 9th ward of New Orleans, LA. She earned an MFA in Studio Art from Southern Methodist University in 2019, and a BA in Studio Art from Dillard University in 2011. Heavily influenced by her upbringing in the New Orleans, Jer’Lisa’s work engages research through the lens of her personal experience, centering identity, place, Southern culture, and Abstraction.
Devezin has shown work at galleries and Museums (Nasher Sculpture Center, Talley Dunn Gallery, Ogden Museum of Southern Art, and internationally at the Jakmel Ekspre-syon Center in Haiti), as well as received several residencies, fellowships, and grants, including the Creative Assembly Fellowship 2025, COR Research Grant 2025, Darryl Chap-pell Artist in Residence Fellowship 2024, and was an Artist in Residence at the Joan Mitchell Center in New Orleans, 2014 amongst others. Devezin is currently based in New Orleans, where she works as an Assistant Professor of Art, Sculpture, and Material Stud-ies in the Newcomb Art Department at Tulane University.

April 2026 at the Deming Art Center will feature the wonderful designs and innovative creations of the Deming High School art students. It is always exciting to see what they have created, and we invite the community to support these young artists by stopping by to see for yourselves. The exhibit will be up from April 2 – 29, 2026. There will be a time to meet these talented student artists on Sunday, April 5, 2026, from 1-2:30PM at the Deming Art Center which is located at 100 S. Gold St., Deming, NM. The gallery hours are 10AM – 4PM Monday – Friday and 10AM – 1PM on Saturday. Drs. Margo Tamez, Cynthia Bejarano, and Jeffrey Shepherd present their new book, Gathering Together, We Decide: Archives of Dispossession, Resistance, and Memory in Ndé Homelands (The University of Arizona Press). Produced in response to the U.S. Government's takeover of Indigenous and familial land for a portion of the border wall, this book highlights an archive of resistance work including: scholarly analyses, testimonios, artwork, legal briefs, poetry, and other cultural productions. The editors of this series will discuss this important collection of work produced by Ndé leaders, Indigenous elders, settler-allies, Native youth, and others associated with the Tamez family. This lecture is part of the NMSU Faculty Lectures @ the Library series put on by the NMSU Library
