Come sing with us! Sacred Harp singing, also known as Shape Note singing, is a 4-part a capella singing style that dates back to pre-revolutionary America. It is participatory--everyone sits in a square and does their best to sing. Every 2 years the Las Cruces Shape Note Singers host a 2-day convention, Saturday February 28 and Sunday March 1. This year we expect 60 singers, both local and from around the country. The sound should be glorious! New singers welcome, no musical training required. The convention is family friendly, and has no political or religious affiliation. Dinner on the grounds. All are welcome!
This month’s program is full of pieces by Bach, Vaughan Williams, and Dvořák, with a special performance of Albinoni’s Oboe Concerto in D minor. Frequent symphony goers will know Graham as a long-time member of the symphony’s oboe section—she has performed for 26 seasons and currently serves as co-principal oboe.

ALASH, Named Distinguished Artist of Tuva, are masters of Tuvan Throat Singing, a remarkable technique for singing multiple pitches at the same time. What distinguishes this group from earlier generations of Tuvan throat singers is the subtle infusion of modern influences into their traditional music. One can find complex harmonies, western instruments, and contemporary song forms in Alash’s music, but its overall sound and spirit remain decidedly Tuvan.Trained in traditional Tuvan music since childhood, they formed a traditional ensemble and won multiple awards for traditional throat singing, both as an ensemble and as individuals. They have borrowed newi deas that mesh well with the sound and feel of traditionalTuvan music, but they have never sacrificed the integrity of their own heritage in an effort to make their music more hip.
