Immersive 'Brushstrokes & Soundwaves’ Event Brings Therapeutic Art and Sound Healing to The Hood
Mesilla, NM  October 17 — A unique, multi-sensory wellness experience is coming to the local community, blending the deeply restorative properties of sound healing with the fluid creativity of watercolor painting.
Participants are invited into this therapeutic journey where they can explore intuitive watercolor painting while fully immersed in a live, ambient sound bath. Designed to reduce stress and foster mindfulness, this workshop provides a gentle space for self-expression, relaxation, and mental clarity.
During the session, certified sound practitioner, Annie Pennies, will use acoustic healing instruments—including crystal singing bowls, gongs, and chimes—to create vibrational frequencies that promote deep cellular relaxation. While bathed in these soothing sounds, attendees will be guided by artist, creative and retired NMSU art professor, Tauna Cole,  through a low-pressure watercolor experience, focusing on the meditative process of painting rather than the final product.
"Our sessions are about creating a sanctuary for the mind and body," said Annie. "By combining the acoustic resonance of a sound bath with the tactile, fluid nature of watercolors, we are offering a unique pathway for people to release tension, tap into their creative intuition, and experience deep personal healing."

Las Cruces Board Gamers meets every Thursday at NMSU Corbett Center on the ground floor, at the windowed room across from Chick Fil e. We usually meet at NMSU though can also go to other areas depending on school schedule. We often favor medium-difficulty games (pandemic is a good example), and often have a wide variety of options for different tastes. Usually not as much "kill your opponent" games. Free and we'll have games so if you don't have one to bring, that's okay, just bring yourself!

Mesilla Valley Film Society is launching Night School, a new late-night screening series celebrating cult classics, horror landmarks, obscure oddities, and underrated gems. The first set of shows will run Saturday nights at 10:30pm throughout July and August. Conceived by self-proclaimed Professor Austin Wolf-Sothern, and hosted by Austin with fellow film scholars Rian Gonzales and Jeff Bennett. Each show will begin with a PowerPoint presentation pertaining to that week’s film, offering production history, cultural context, and behind-the-scenes trivia.

More than just a screening series, Night School embraces the communal spirit of repertory cinema, where audiences gather to experience movies the way they were meant to be seen: on the big screen, with fellow fans. To honor that, we felt it was important to dedicate our first semester to highlighting the cinematic experience with “Movies at the Movies!” Eight films that take place in, or memorably feature, a movie theater.

The inaugural lineup includes:
• July 11: Popcorn (1991) – A loving celebration of horror gimmicks and movie theater mayhem.
• July 18: Taxi Driver (1976) – A defining portrait of urban alienation and one of American cinema's most influential character studies, celebrating its 50th Anniversary.
• July 25: The Blob (1988) – The gloriously gooey remake that deserves its place among the greatest practical-effects horror remakes ever made.
• August 1: Messiah of Evil (1974) – Or is it MESILLA OF EVIL? A dreamlike descent into cosmic dread and one of horror's most haunting cult discoveries.
• August 8: Hunting Humans (2002) – Presented on VHS, preserving the analog grit and underground spirit of this independent cult oddity. Preceded by a cartoon on 16mm.
• August 15: Anguish (1987) – A mind-bending psychological horror experience that blurs the line between audience and screen.
• August 22: Donnie Darko (2001) – A generation-defining genre blend of science fiction, mystery, comedy, and drama, celebrating its 25th Anniversary.
• August 29: Demons (1985) – An explosive Italian horror classic where the movie theater itself becomes a nightmare.
Each presentation is brief, entertaining, and designed for casual moviegoers and die-hard film buffs alike. Whether you're seeing a favorite for the fiftieth time or discovering it for the first, Night School is designed to make every screening a little more rewarding—and a lot more fun!

October 2026, at the Deming Art Center will feature the annual DAC Membership exhibit. Anyone who is a member of the Deming Art Center is eligible to participate and there will be a diverse body of work on display. The show will run from October 2-30, 2026. There will be a time to meet the artists on Sunday, October 4, 2026, from 1PM – 2:30PM and the public is invited. The center is located at 100 S. Gold St., in Deming, NM and is open from 10AM – 4PM, Mon – Fri, and 10 – 1PM on Saturday. The NMSU Art Museum is pleased to present On the Edge, an exhibition that traces the trajectory of Shirley Crow’s career, exploring an artistic practice grounded in a lasting sense of wonder about the mysteries of the universe. Spanning nearly fifty years, and including pastel, ink, graphite, and oil, Crow’s work invites viewers to experience her intuitive visual language informed by the magic of creativity and an ongoing questioning of our existence. Opening reception for Shirley Crow: On the Edge is on October 16 from 5:30-7:30 pm, and will be on display through July 17, 2027.

The NMSU Art Museum proudly presents Marietta Patricia Leis: Breathing Lessons, a major career retrospective by renowned New Mexico-based artist Marietta Leis. The exhibition reflects Leis’s exploration of color, time, movement, and place across a diverse range of media, including: video, painting, photography, sculpture, poetry, and sound. Opening reception for Marietta Patricia Leis: Breathing Lessons is on October 16 from 5:30-7:30 pm, and will be on display through March 6, 2027.

The NMSU Art Museum proudly presents Lean In, an exhibition presenting works by three New Mexico-based artists who have been influenced and mentored by artist Marietta Patricia Leis during her nearly 50-year career as an interdisciplinary artist.

Lean In, featuring works by Dorielle Caimi, Veronica Primerano and Stefan Jennings Batista, demonstrates that a successful artistic practice extends beyond the objects produced in the studio; it is also built through relationships, discipline, and the transmission of knowledge. The artists featured in this exhibition explore diverse concepts related to mysticism, resilience, and color theory, but all three have benefited from exposure to Leis’ ongoing dedication to a successful studio practice. Lean In is on display in the museum’s Mullennix Bridge Gallery from October 16, 2026 through March 6, 2027.
