Daniel Vega-Albela joins NHSO and Marianna Gabbi for season finale concert
When he was growing up in Mexico, violinist Daniel Vega-Albela fell in love with the music of Mozart, and has been playing it ever since. This Sunday, he will perform Mozart’s Violin Concerto No. 5 with the New Horizons Symphony Orchestra, under the baton of Dr. Marianna Gabbi. “Mozart was probably my first love,” he said in this interview with Gabbi and Intermezzo host Leora Zeitlin. “I’ve been playing this concerto ever since I was a kid. It’s amazing to see that every time I pick it up again, I find something different. I can continue to grow with this concerto.”
Gabbi, who has been conducting the community orchestra for the past six years, described the concerto as ”joyful and beautiful. The slow movement is just exquisite. And Daniel does such a beautiful job.” The concert will honor Millie Conrad, an oboist who founded the ensemble fifteen years ago. In addition to the Mozart concerto, the orchestra will perform the “Russian Eastern Overture” by Rimsky-Korsakov, which will be guest-conducted by Kathy Hill, and works by Dvorak and Tchaikovsky. The free concert takes place at 3 p.m. at the Atkinson Recital Hall.
