As every performer and conductor knows, you have to be prepared for the unexpected: a slip of the memory, a violin string snapping, or a last-minute cancellation by a soloist. That’s what conductor Dr. Marianna Gabbi faced this week, when her long-time friend, acclaimed classical guitarist Javier Calderon, was suddenly hospitalized and had to cancel his concert this weekend with the New Horizons Symphony Orchestra.

Diana Carolina Sanchez was singing in a choir the first time she saw a violin. “I just saw the violin, and I fell in love – that’s it,” the Colombian violinist recounted in an interview at KRWG. She began studying at a conservatory in her home town in Colombia, and “the first year I was [studying violin], I knew that was what I wanted for my whole life.” This Sunday, Sanchez will perform the Mendelssohn Violin Concerto in a free concert with the New Horizons Symphony Orchestra and conductor Dr. Marianna Gabbi.
