EDDY COUNTY, NM - On December 31, 2021, at approximately 7:19 p.m., the New Mexico State Police investigated a one-vehicle fatal rollover crash on US Highway 285 near milepost 62, south of Artesia, NM.
The initial investigation indicates a 2012 Volkswagen passenger car, driven by Matthew S. Fierro (33) of Carlsbad, NM, was traveling north on US Highway 285. For reasons unknown, the Volkswagen left the roadway, struck a guardrail, and rolled. The driver, Fierro who was not wearing a seatbelt was ejected from the vehicle. Fierro sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced deceased on scene by the Office of Medical Investigator.
Alcohol does not appear to be a factor and seat belts were not properly used. This crash is under investigation by the New Mexico State Police.
