ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) — Albuquerque police say they have made an arrest in a shooting that occurred as protesters in New Mexico’s largest city tried to tear down a bronze statue of a Spanish conquistador outside a museum.
Police said 31-year-old Stephen Ray Baca was arrested on suspicion of aggravated battery in the Monday night shooting that left another man critically wounded. The shooting happened near a confrontation Monday night between protesters and a group of armed men trying to protect the statue of Juan de Oñate. Online court records don't list an attorney who could comment on Baca's behalf.
