Las Cruces Woman Charged With Hiding 100 Pounds Of Meth At Border Patrol Checkpoint

ALBUQUERQUE – Abigail Rubio, 26, of Las Cruces, N.M., appeared in federal court for a detention hearing this week on conspiracy and methamphetamine trafficking charges.

According to a criminal complaint, Rubio drove through a Border Patrol checkpoint near Alamogordo, N.M. on February 17, 2019.  Agents became suspicious of Rubio because her hands were “trembling” when they questioned her.  A K-9 dog detected drugs in her car and referred her for further inspection.  Agents then searched the car and found around 9 kilograms of methamphetamine in a hidden compartment under the back seat.   Agents later found more methamphetamine for a total of around 100 pounds.

Rubio is currently in custody awaiting trial.   If convicted, she faces up from 10 years to life in prison.

United States Border Patrol investigated this case.  Special Assistant U.S. Attorney Christopher E. Solis is prosecuting the case.
