Las Cruces Crime Prevention and Safety Event this Saturday

The Las Cruces police and fire departments, along with other agencies and several local businesses, will gather Saturday for a free Crime Prevention and Safety Event.

The event is scheduled for 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, March 2, on the west side parking lot of the Walmart Supercenter, 571 Walton Blvd.

LCPD will offer free VIN etching on all windows of vehicles. Etching the VIN on all windows is a countermeasure to motor vehicle theft as it reduces the value of stolen vehicles that are sold for parts. Police also will offer a free Ident-a-Child program and officers will be on hand to answer questions from the public.

The Las Cruces Fire Department will have a hands-only CPR kiosk where residents can learn how to perform the potential life-saving technique. Firefighters also will be giving away 9-volt batteries suitable for most smoke and carbon monoxide alarms. The 9-volt batteries were provided by a grant obtained by Keep Dona Ana County Beautiful.

Local businesses expected to participate in the event include Walmart, the American Automobile Association, Sprint, Lo-Jack, AT&T, AARP, Allstate Insurance, Memorial Medical Center, Mountainview Regional Medical Center, Pep Boys and Sounds Unique. Representatives from the Army National Guard and the Albuquerque Police Department will also be on hand.

The event is free and open to the public.
