The Las Cruces Police Department is mourning the loss of retired Chief Jaime Montoya who lost his battle with cancer on Thursday.
Montoya was LCPD’s Chief from December 2013 until his retirement in December 2017. Prior to his tenure as chief he served as a deputy chief with the department since January 2010.
Montoya earned a bachelor’s degree from New Mexico State University and graduated from LCPD’s Academy in 1991. He served as a patrol officer, traffic officer, detective, sergeant and lieutenant prior to becoming a deputy chief in 2010.
Among his many accomplishments as Chief were the building and completion of the East Mesa Public Safety Complex and a communications strategy that allowed LCPD to share information with residents through an increased use of social media.
Upon announcing his retirement in 2017 Montoya said, “It has been rewarding to work for the City of Las Cruces and its citizens. I wish nothing but the best for the future of the Las Cruces Police Department and the City. I will never be able to repay the community, the city and the department for all they have given me.”
The men and women of LCPD wish to extend our deepest sympathies to Jaime’s family and friends. Jaime was a dedicated leader, a brother and a true friend to all who knew him. His presence had a positive impact on our community and his loss will be mourned by all.
