REAL ID extensions, including New Mexico, allow Federal agencies to accept
driver's licenses from those states, which have still not been able to meet
compliance with the law.
The new grace period shifts the Air Force's enforcement date for states with
an extension from Oct. 10, 2016 to Jan. 10, 2017. Driver's licenses from
these states will be accepted at all federal facilities, to include DOD
installations, as proof of identity until the 90-day grace period expires.
Following the extension, individuals who do not have a license from a
compliant state will be asked to provide alternate acceptable identification
such as a U.S. passport.
There are currently 24 states and four territories with DHS extensions to

The REAL ID Act of 2005 establishes minimum standards for the production and issuance of state-issued driver's licenses and identification cards. This
Act prohibits federal agencies from accepting official use driver licenses
and identity cards from states unless the department of Homeland Security
determines the state meets set standards.
