Las Cruces Catholic School students will be doing their part to raise awareness for cancer by designating next week at school as Lavender Week.
Holy Cross Elementary, Holy Cross Middle School and St. Mary’s High School students will “lavender out” themselves and their campus to support CARE (Cancer Aid Resource & Education). Lavender is the color that’s used to create awareness for all types of cancer.
CARE is a local non-profit that offers financial support for cancer patients locally. CARE assists patients and their families with non-medical needs such as rent/mortgage, utilities, groceries, travel costs to appointments and more. Las Cruces Catholic School is the first school in Las Cruces that has dedicated a week to CARE. The list below details events the school will be doing:
· Monday, October 3rd—Lavender t-shirt day and Cash for CARE kick-off. Buckets will be placed in each classroom to collect cash donations. The class that raises the most money will be given a pizza party.
· Tuesday, October 4th—Lavender t-shirt day again and a Lavender bake sale afterschool at 3:00 p.m., along with members of CARE who will selling cancer awareness bracelets and vehicle ribbon magnets.
· Wednesday, October 5th—Each student will wear a lavender ribbon during Mass. Cash donations continue to be collected in each class bucket.
· Thursday, October 6th—Students can pay to wear jeans with their special-ordered Holy Cross/St. Mary’s lavender t-shirt.
· Friday, October 7th—School-wide Lavender Rosary at 2:30 p.m. and LAVENDER OUT…anything lavender goes.
· Saturday, October 8th—St. Mary’s High School Car Wash for CARE at Pep Boys on Lohman from 8am-1pm. The cost is $5.
In order for students to be allowed to wear their own lavender shirts, they must make a monetary donation to CARE, unless they purchased a shirt through the school, where proceeds from t-shirt sales will go to CARE. In year’s past, the school has raised more than $2,000 during each cancer awareness week in its efforts to support the fight against cancer.
