The New Desert Harmony Singers are in final preparations for their 2016 summer concert titled "Our Greatest Hits!" presented by The Las Cruces Bulletin. Don Harlow, Musical Director, says "after ten years of performing popular music in the region, we felt it was the perfect time to do a Greatest Hits show. The concert will consist of some of the best songs NDHS has performed at least once during the group’s first ten years. There will be songs from each of the popular musical genres NDHS regularly performs. As we’ve done before, we’ll feature the New Mexico State University Contemporary Dance Theater students and the Las Cruces Golden Divas dancers. For the first time, we’ll also feature the Ladies On Tap dance group.”
The concert will be at 7:00PM on Saturday, August 13th at the NMSU Atkinson Recital Hall. Tickets are $10 and are available from any NDHS member, at Hubbard's Music-N-More, White's Music Box, St. Paul's Methodist Church, or at the door the night of the performance.
Act 1 will include songs from the Jazz/Swing, Gospel, and Country/Western genres. The Jazz/Swing section is one 12-minute-long medley titled “Big Band Bash” that includes some well-known hits from the 1940s and 1950s, like: “JukeboxSaturday Night,” “Sentimental Journey,” and “It Don’t Mean A Thing If It Ain’t Got That Swing.” The Act 1 closing song is the foot-stomping and hand-clapping country favorite; “Mountain Music.”
Act 2 will include songs from the Pop/Rock and Broadway genres. The Pop/Rock section begins with a 5-minute medley titled “Sixties With A Twist” that includes portions of ten hits from the 1960s, like: “Born To Be Wild,” “Big Girls Don’t Cry,” “Leavin’ On A Jet Plane,” and “All You Need Is Love.” Also in the Pop/Rock section, they’ll perform Michael Jackson’s “Thriller,” Bob Seger’s “Old Time Rock & Roll,” “Come Sail Away” by Styx, and “California Dreamin’” by The Mamas & The Papas.
The finale section of the show is a single 16-minute medley of Broadway music featuring many of the great hits from the Golden Years of Broadway.
The music alone would make a great evening, but with the visual and energetic component of the NMSU CDT dancers, the Golden Divas, and the Ladies On Tap added in, this will be a true musical experience that the whole family can enjoy.
