Las Cruces Auto Burglary Suspect Barricades Himself Briefly Inside Vehicle

  Las Cruces Police arrested a man suspected of burglarizing a vehicle and briefly barricading himself inside the car when officers arrived on scene.

Michael Shackelford, 33, of the 3200 block of Missouri Avenue, is charged with one count of burglary of a vehicle. The charges is a fourth-degree felony.

Police were dispatched to the 3100 block of Risner Street at about 9 a.m. Sunday, May 15, after a man saw Shackelford inside a neighbor’s vehicle.

Las Cruces Police officers arrived to find Shackelford still inside the car. Initially, Shackelford refused officers’ commands to exit the vehicle. Officers surrounded the vehicle and continued to persuade Shackelford to exit which he did after about 10 minutes. He was taken into custody without further incident.

Police believe Shackelford entered the vehicle through an unlocked door.

Shackelford was booked into the Dona Ana County Detention Center where he was initially being held without bond.
