The father of an 11-year-old Navajo girl who was kidnapped and killed last week says he's grateful for the support his family has received.
Gary Mike made his first statement Thursday since the death of Ashlynne Mike. The Daily Times of Farmington reports that he thanked law enforcement and others who aided in the search, and people nationwide for their prayers, well wishes and donations.
Authorities say a stranger lured Ashlynne Mike and her younger brother into a van after school on May 2. Her brother later was freed.
Ashlynne's body was found the next day in the Shiprock area.
Tom Begaye Jr. has been charged with kidnapping and murder.
Gary Mike says his son is living out of state with his mother for his mental well-being.
