A name has been chosen! One lucky Las Crucen’s suggestion on what to name CARE’s (Cancer Aid Resource & Education) new enchilada event has been picked and it is, The Big Event: A community that CAREs.
The winning name was submitted by Jaymee Fiskum, who is now the recipient of several gift certificates and $500 courtesy of Roberto Estrada, owner of Roberto’s restaurant. The name was picked by a committee of five CARE volunteers.
There were also two runners-up that included Claudia Diaz (no relation to CARE President Yoli Diaz) and Kevin Self. Diaz submitted the name Las LuCes de LAs CRucEs (CARE name capitalized) and Self suggested Viva la Fiesta.
“We received so many suggestions that we were overwhelmed and it was quite a difficult choice,” says CARE President/Executive Director Yoli Diaz. “We felt The Big Event with the subtitle, A community that CAREs, really encompassed what this large-scale event will be, while highlighting the CARE name.”
The Big Event will be held September 23, 24 & 25th at the new city plaza on Main Street Downtown. It’s set to honor the life-long commitment of the whole enchilada creator Roberto Estrada, while celebrating southern New Mexico's traditions, people and great food.
There will be local vendors, local music including mariachis and entertainment with folklorico dancers, an enchilada cooking contest, quilt making contest, a tractor show, games, carnival, and possibly a parade. The event will also be free to enter.
In addition, CARE is currently seeking those with graphic art skills interested in submitting a logo for the event. Anyone interested can submit designs to carelc.org@gmail.com. The winning logo will be used for all marketing and branding purposes related to The Big Event. Entries can be submitted as soon as possible.
