Roosevelt County Proposes Multi-County Jail

A New Mexico county is considering a study on whether it's feasible for one jail to serve four counties.

The Clovis News Journal reports that Roosevelt County Attorney Randy Knudson has asked Curry County officials to consider delaying their plans for a jail expansion until they can hold a discussion on a multi-county facility. Knudson wrote that each county could benefit from cost savings.

Curry County commissioners are expected to discuss the issue Tuesday.

The multi-county detention facility would serve Roosevelt, Curry, De Baca and Quay counties.

Both Curry and Roosevelt have had problems at their jails in recent years, including multiple escapes. Curry County officials raised taxes to fund what they said would be a $10 million jail renovation.
