New Mexico Supreme Court Justice Richard Bosson is planning to retire in October.
Bosson said it's time for him to leave and allow "younger blood" to take over.
The 71-year-old has been practicing law in the state since 1970. He spent his last 13 years on the Supreme Court.
At the start of his legal career, Bosson helped found Albuquerque's Mexican American Legal Defense and Education Fund. Bosson later went into private practice in Santa Fe while working for government and private industry groups.
The process to replace Bosson will begin when he officially submits his retirement.
Executive director of the State Bar of New Mexico, Joe Conte, says the position will be a tough spot to fill.
