Sunland Park: Mexico Wastewater Spill Contained

A press release states the city of Sunland Park dealt with a potential emergency this week.  Tuesday evening at about 6:30pm officials in the City of Sunland Park were alerted of an impending problem.  Partially treated water from a water treatment plant in Mexico was flowing across the desert in the southern part of the city.

Immediately upon being alerted, the city release says officials alerted their counterparts in Juarez and immediate action was taken to stop the leak and contain the flow.  An unknown quantity of water had been discharged.  The spill area is from an area near the intersection of Posey Road and Anapra Road south to the Border and beyond.

The release states the spill is not believed to present a health risk but residents are cautioned about walking or allowing their pets in the arroyos and ditches along Anapra Road.

The city has teamed with CRRUA to treat the affected area and has alerted the New Mexico Environmental Department Ground Water Division who will be investigating the problem and recommended what, if any, action must be taken to mitigate possible environmental issues.

The release says Sunland Park officials are working with Mexican Officials to minimize the impact of the spill.

The next action will be the capture of any standing water which will be transported to the CRRUA Facility and treated.  Areas of possible contamination will be chemically treated and if required by the EPA contaminated soil will be removed and disposed of in an appropriate facility.

Questions can be addressed to the City Manager of Sunland Park at 575-997-7491.
