Miss Las Cruces Steps Down After DWI Arrest

A woman named Miss Las Cruces in June has resigned after her arrest on suspicion of aggravated DWI.

Pageant officials issued a statement from 22-year-old Sarah J. Richardson Wednesday saying her actions aren't consistent with a Miss America contestant and she's sorry for the people she let down.

The Las Cruces Sun-News reports that Richardson was arrested late Sunday after crashing her Chrysler PT Cruiser into a power pole. Authorities say she's facing charges of aggravated DWI and failure to exercise due care.

Richardson is from Alamogordo and free on bond.

Pageant officials named runner-up Taylor Rey as the new Miss Las Cruces. She will represent Las Cruces at the Miss New Mexico pageant in June. The winner will compete for the Miss America title.
