Las Cruces – A juvenile who is believed to have stabbed a man during a fight at an area convenience store on Thursday evening has been arrested.
Angel Linares, 17, is charged with one count of aggravated battery with a deadly weapon. The 26-year-old victim of the stabbing was airlifted to University Medical Center of El Paso with two stab wounds to his chest. His injuries were not life-threatening.
Shortly after 9:30 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 1, Las Cruces Police were called to the Pic Quik store located at 825 Avenida de Mesilla where a 26-year-old man was suffering from the stab wounds.
Police learned that Linares was in the front passenger seat of a pickup, parked in the store's parking lot and waiting for a relative to return from the store, when another truck drove up and parked nearby. The 26-year-old started walking into the store when Linares spit or threw something at the man.
The man approached Linares and the two exchanged words. Detectives learned that Linares then retrieved a knife from the pickup and stabbed the man. Linares and the victim continued to fight until two witnesses intervened and separated them.
The witnesses restrained Linares and took possession of the knife until police arrived.
Linares is behind held without bond at the Dona Ana County Detention Center.
