Rail Runner Fares Rising

By KRWG News

New Mexico – Riders of New Mexico's commuter train will have to reach into their pockets for more cash to ride the Rail Runner.

The Rio Metro Regional Transit District voted 9-3 during a special meeting Thursday to raise fares for one-way trips as well as daily, monthly and annual passes.

Officials say the higher fares won't take effect for at least 45 days.

The increases range from $1 to $2 more for a day pass and $35 to $110 more for annual passes.

The Rail Runner had posted the proposed fare changes on its website more than a month before Thursday's meeting and a series of public meetings were hosted by the Rio Metro board.

The board says the increases will generate about $600,000 annually in additional revenue if ridership stays consistent.
