Silver City, New Mexico – SILVER CITY, N.M. (KRWG) Firefighters are battling two large wildfires in New Mexico.

A blaze near the rugged Gila Wilderness in the southwest has grown to more than 70,000 acres.

Officials said Sunday that the Miller fire is 20 percent contained.

The human-caused blaze broke out April 28. It moved past the Gila Cliff Dwellings without damaging the ancient American Indian ruins.

More than 500 firefighters assisted by helicopters are battling the blaze.

Meanwhile, the Mayhill fire around Lincoln National Forest is nearing containment after scorching nearly 32,000 acres.

Fire officials said Sunday that the blaze was 85 percent contained.

The fire was spotted a week ago and its cause is under investigation.
