Deming – An archaeology team from the Museum of New Mexico has unearthed tools and a structure believed to have been used by an ancient nomadic hunter-gatherer society in southwestern New Mexico.
The team has been working on a three-acre site north of Deming.
Project director Steve Lentz says the unidentified groups roamed the area well before the Mimbres Indians, who lived in the Mimbres Valley about a thousand years ago.
Lentz says archaeologists don't know much about the ancient groups.
The Santa Fe-based team plans to work in the area for roughly the rest of the month, then do additional tests and research in their labs.
The Deming Headlight reports that evidence of the site was uncovered when work was being done on the state land just off of the highway.
