New Mexico – Gov. Bill Richardson has decided against using $2.8 million in federal stimulus funds to buy land for a proposed wild horse sanctuary near Santa Fe.
Instead, he is moving $3.1 million from a discretionary stimulus account into the state budget.
The governor's office said Wednesday the funds represent the remaining balance of the discretionary funds made available to Richardson through the federal stimulus act.
Earlier this year, he had proposed spending $2.8 million in federal stimulus funds to buy the land. The governor says those funds are the bulk of what's designated for New Mexico's general fund.
Republican Gov.-elect Susana Martinez takes office Jan. 1.
