Operachi: A Fusion of Opera and Mariachi Vocals

"Mexican Catrina's Twist & Purr" at the Rio Grande Theatre - Saturday, November 5th at 7pm. FREE admission.

Las Cruces, NM - On this edition of PUENTES, bridges to the community, host Emily Guerra meets with University of Texas at El Paso Assistant Voice Professor, Dr. Juanita Ulloa. She is American born and was raised primarily in Mexico City, but also lived in Panama and Madrid, Spain. Her experience as a lyric mezzo-soprano and her love of Mariachi Mexican songs brought about a new singing style for women called “Operachi,” a fusion of opera and Mariachi.

Ulloa, also known as “The High Priestess of Operachi, will be one of the performers Saturday, November 5th at 7 pm at the Rio Grande Theatre, along with Ballet Folklorico Orgullo de Mi Tierra de Elena Vargas. The “Day of The Dead Celebration: Mexican Catrina’s Twist and Purr” is a FREE concert presented by the Consulate General of Mexico in El Paso (Centro Cultural Mexicano Paso del Norte) and The City of Las Cruces.
