National Disability Employment Month

October 12, 2013 – Las Cruces, NM - On this edition of PUENTES, Emily Guerra bridges the community with Vocational Rehabilitation Technician for the State of New Mexico, Jose Armendariz to talk about National Disability Employment Awareness Month (NDEAM).

NDEAM began in 1945 when Congress enacted a law declaring the first week in October each year as “National Employ the Physically Handicapped Week.” In 1962, the word physically was removed to acknowledge the employment needs and contributions of individuals with all types of disabilities. Congress expanded the week to a month in 1988 and changed the name to “National Disability Employment Awareness Month,” and is led by the U.S. Department of Labor's Office of Disability Employment Policy.

“Because We Are EQUAL to the Task,” is the NDEAM’s theme for this year. The campaign emphasizes that, at work, it is what people can do that matters. NDEAM promotes positive employment outcomes for people with disabilities, and what they can do when they receive encouragement and support.
