IFCE-Institute for Community Engagement

March 8, 2013 – Las Cruces, NM - On this edition of PUENTES, Emily Guerra bridges the community with Institute for Community Engagement (IFCE) Board President and Department Head of the English department at New Mexico State University, Monica Torres; and with IFCE Community Engagement Director, Veronica Carmona.

IFCE is a registered New Mexico non-profit agency based in Mesilla Park. Their mission is to research and analyze issues, develop policy options, and inform community members and leaders on topics that affect the well-being of Southern New Mexico citizens in the areas of community building, broad-based economic development, and environmental sustainability.

A Las Cruces native, Torres has long been interested in broad-based community development and has served on the boards of rape crisis centers in southern and central New Mexico. Carmona is a native of Ciudad Juarez, Chihuahua and has been Lead Organizer for the Colonias Development Council (CDC) in Doña Ana County since 2004 and has dedicated her life to social justice causes, including human and immigrant rights and working with rural communities to develop leadership and self-sufficiency.
