Work Continues At Young Park Pond In Las Cruces

The City of Las Cruces continues to work on the pond at Young Park located at 1905 Nevada Avenue. Here is a statement from the city:

The pond was drained at the end of January for cleaning and repair and installation of a new aeration system.

The Department of Game and Fish removed and relocated fish and turtles, and City staff and Codes officers assisted with removal of the ducks. While continuing to dry, staff probed the pond for weeks for any remaining wildlife. They found and relocated two additional turtles.

Today Parks & Recreation Staff report that the dirt is now at a consistency where it is easier to remove from the bottom of the pond. The previous soggy consistency of the dirt made it difficult to remove and made it difficult to maneuver the vehicles that haul the dirt and sediment away from the pond. As it continues to dry, it is expected to become even more manageable for removal.

Construction staff placed rebar on the base of the pond’s fountain, and they will also repour the base that leads into the pond. Equipment operators are currently turning the dirt to expedite the drying process.

As the pond dries further, more dump trucks will be requested to haul dirt away from the pond. The work was expected to last a month, weather and equipment permitting.
