Work Continues To Contain Fires In Southwest New Mexico

Crews in New Mexico continue to work to contain fires in southwest New Mexico. Fire Officials say that the Tadpole Fire on land in the Gila National Forest was ignited by lighting and started on June 6th. As of Thursday, the fire is reported to be at 7,500 acres and is 30 precent contained. The fire has closed parts of New Mexico Highway 15. Officials say the area surrounding the fire in the Gila National Forest is scheduled to be closed until the end of August.

Officials also report crews are working to contain the Mims Lake Fire in Truth or Consequences started Thursday evening. Wendy Mason with the Forestry Division gives an update on the Sierra County fire that is estimated to be at 60 acres.

"The fire right now is 30 percent contained, evacuations were lifted for a small residential area late last night. Firefighters are continuing to work to get that contained today," said Mason.

Mason says it's important to be prepared for possible wildfire danger during fire season.
