Wild Horse Roundup In El Rito

By KRWG News

El Rito, New Mexico – EL RITO, N.M. (KRWG) Officials with the Carson National Forest have begun rounding up wild horses in northern New Mexico.

The horses form the Jarita Mesa Wild Horse Territory on the El Rito Ranger District will be gathered over the next few months then taken to the Wild Horse Inmate Program at the East Canon Correctional Complex in Colorado. There, the specially trained inmates get the horses ready for adoption.

Forest officials say the wild horses are gathered when vegetation and water become scarce or when too many animals use the area.

The Bureau of Land Management holds adoptions at the East Canon Correctional Complex two Fridays per month. The minimum adoption fee is $125 for untrained animals and $1,025 for saddle trained mustangs. Prices for halter trained animals vary.
