After a year on hiatus during remote learning, Las Cruces Public Schools’ Safe Routes to School program announces the return of Walk to School Days, and a month-long celebration of walking to school with events planned at all 25 elementary schools in the district.
“We are thrilled,” program coordinator Ashleigh Curry said of the schools’ participation. “Last year, we recognized International Walk to School Day with chalk artwork projects at our schools and encouraged safely-distanced physical activity. Now that our students are back, these events are a great reminder that physical activity is important and walking to school is an opportunity to connect with neighbors and friends.”
MacArthur Elementary will kick off district events on Friday, Oct. 1 at Valley Verde Park, located on Hadley Drive behind the Save Mart on Valley. The group will meet at 7:30 a.m. and will walk to campus at 7:40 a.m. According to Curry, MacArthur is this year’s highlight school.
“All of our schools do a phenomenal job supporting our Walk to School efforts, but MacArthur’s staff consistently go the extra mile to inspire and motivate students to participate in this event,” said Curry, who estimates more than 70 MacArthur students walk to school on any given Friday with the Walking School Bus.
On Wednesday, Oct. 6, Jornada Elementary will dedicate its walk to the late superintendent Dr. Karen Trujillo starting at 7:30 at the Ben Trujillo State Farm agency located at 1151 Heather Avenue.
