UPDATE: Shooting Involving Hobbs Police Department

Hobbs, NM – On August 22, 2019 the New Mexico State Police Investigations Bureau was contacted by the Hobbs Police Department (HPD) to investigate an officer involved shooting.  State Police investigators learned that on August 22, 2019 at about 11:15 p.m. HPD Officer Rudy Hille was called to the Allsup’s located at 321 Dal Paso for reports of a male individual armed with a firearm.  A witness in a dark in color pickup saw the man with the firearm and reported it to the store clerk.

Officer Hille arrived at the Allsup’s, to find Roberto Mata (46) of Carlsbad, armed with a firearm.  Officer Hille gave Mata several commands to drop his firearm. Mata ignored the officer’s commands, then raised the firearm and fired at the witness, striking the witness's vehicle.  Officer Hille fired his department firearm fatally striking Mata.  Mata was pronounced deceased at the scene by the Office of the Medical Investigator. Neither Officer Hille nor the witness were injured in the incident.

Officer Hille is a four-year veteran of the Hobbs Police Department. For inquiries about Officer Hille’s duty status please contact the Hobbs Police Department.  At the conclusion of the investigation into this incident, the case will be sent to the appropriate district attorney.  No further information is currently available.
