Two Doña Ana County Sheriff’s detectives recovered a truck belonging to the New Mexico Department of Game and Fish Friday morning, just hours after the truck was reportedly stolen.

The unit, described as a gray 2018 Ford F-250 with Game and Fish insignia on the doors and tailgate, was reportedly stolen from the 2400 block of Enriquez Lane just after 7 a.m. Friday. Information given to the sheriff’s office suggested a firearm was also inside the truck, along with part of the officer’s uniform.

Just after 10 a.m., two sheriff’s detectives spotted the Game and Fish unit parked at a restaurant near the intersection of Missouri Avenue and El Paseo Road in Las Cruces. The detectives, with assistance from Las Cruces Police, saw a man matching the description of the suspect attempt to enter the passenger side of the vehicle. The suspect was taken into custody without incident, and was reportedly wearing a Game and Fish department-issued hat.

The suspect is identified as Alejandro Norberto Nevarez, 27, of Las Cruces. He is charged with unlawful taking of a motor vehicle, impersonating a peace officer and felon in possession of a firearm.

Nevarez was taken to the Doña Ana County Sheriff’s Office for questioning. He will then be transported to the Doña Ana County Detention Center where he will be held without bond, pending arraignment.
