Today, Representative Xochitl Torres Small (NM-02) issued the following statement in response to the bipartisan border deal:
“I am glad to see leadership of both parties work in good faith to find a compromise that prevents another government shutdown and provides for border security. This negotiation was an example of bipartisan give-and-take, which is why I will support the bill. The bill also provides much needed increases for tribal healthcare programs, new infrastructure projects, and combatting the opioid epidemic.
As the Chair of the House Homeland Security Oversight Subcommittee, I will work with CBP and people who live along the border to make sure resources are used effectively, appropriately, and reach the most rural parts of our border. We must also acknowledge that a fundamental part of border security is a clear and moral immigration system, which includes a path to citizenship for DREAMers, work visas, and more effective and efficient asylum processing. Our work on these issues must continue.”
