Organization Collecting School Supplies

(LAS CRUCES) -- Back-to-school can be a difficult time for many students.  It can also be a challenge for parents as well, but a local organization is hoping to change that by relieving some of that financial stress.

Anela Flores is helping area students prepare for another year of school.

“The start of a new year should bring all this excitement and promise of learning and growing for some kids that’s just not he reality,” she said.

Flores is with MECA Therapies, a group providing early intervention services for infants and young children who have or are at risk of developing delays.  Every year workers ask for the community to come together to help properly send students back to the classroom.

“We have different community events going on all year round when it comes to signing up for program back to school, I have a list that fills up incredibly quickly,” she said.

Project back to school is different than any other regular drive.  Volunteers taking part are also collecting basic care items such as tooth brushes and clothing.

“There is a nomination form online and we’ve also circulated this nomination form to a number of agencies throughout the city so anyone can really nominate a family.  We don’t’ have any criteria.  It’s all based on good faith that these people really need these items,” she said.

The group gives back not only to the las cruces community, but to students in chaparrell and anthony.

“We’re going to keep a portion of what we receive here and we’re going to take a portion out to the south and we’re going to have two days,” she said.

The items collected will be passed out on July 28th and August 4th.
