Santa Fe, NM: The Energy, Minerals and Natural Resources Department’s (EMNRD) State Parks Division announces that State Parks are returning to normal seasonal operations now that restrictions in the Public Health Order have been lifted. COVID-safe practices are still in place, including group size limits depending on county tier status, social distancing, and mask wearing.
Beginning April 16th, camping opportunities will be expanded in many parks. Some parks will now allow camping without an online reservation, but reservations ahead of time are still strongly encouraged. Limited dispersed camping in undeveloped sites will be allowed in some parks. With different seasonal closures in effect, the public is encouraged to “know before you go” and check the website for specific park information before you embark on your next adventure.
“Thanks to the Governor’s leadership, New Mexico has made excellent progress in curbing the spread of COVID-19 which now allows State Parks to operate under our normal seasonal guidelines,” said State Parks Director Christy Tafoya. “Even with this progress it is still crucial for our visitors to keep practicing COVID-safe guidance and make sure they’re aware of operations before visiting a park.”
Due to the popularity and high interest in camping, the public is encouraged to reserve campsites through the reservation system to ensure a camping spot. In addition, visitors may purchase day-use passes online for their convenience. Those who purchase day-use passes online or make camping reservations online are encouraged to print a receipt or download the receipt and have it available on an electronic device to present upon arrival at the park.
Several state parks are currently managing for seasonal closures and some campgrounds, services, and facilities may not be available. Please check the State Parks website and know before you go.
State Parks advises the additional guidance is still in place:
• Wearing a mask or cloth face covering is mandatory in public settings.
• Group size limits vary by county, check the status of the county in which the State Park is located for most current information.
• Bring hand sanitizer and additional personal protective equipment.
• Maintain social distance of 6 feet from people not in your group.
• Some water access may be limited at this time due to seasonal conditions.
• To limit interactions, please use exact change when paying fees or purchase passes online.
• Recreate responsibly and pack out all trash.
