The New Mexico Legislature has sent a revised budget to Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham. The budget cuts spending by $600 million. The Governor had requested a cut of $450 million. The Governor's plan included cost of living adjustments for state employees of 2 percent, a 50 percent reduction from the original budget approved in January. Instead, the legislature approved a plan with a 1 percent increase for educators and a 1 percent increase for state employees who make less than $50,000 a year. In recent years, New Mexico has faced a high rate of unfilled state positions and a teacher shortage.
