Las Cruces Utilities: Getting an Edge on Professional Development

Career growth is important, and Las Cruces Utilities (LCU) values the professional development of its associates. For four LCU associates, they are growing their knowledge by taking the New Mexico EDGE (Education Designed to Generate Excellence in the Public Sector) program, a service of New Mexico State University's Cooperative Extension Service.
NM EDGE is a program designed to provide a comprehensive course of study to administrators, managers, elected officials, and staff in local, state, tribal, and national government, through which participants can acquire and apply the best practices and theory to their management behaviors and strategies using the highest professional standards.

“The focus of the program is ‘better government through education’,” said Delilah Walsh, LCU director. “At Utilities we believe that learning never stops and that every new bit of knowledge becomes a benefit not only for the associate, but for the entire organization.

“These classes are important for managing the financials for LCU. We provide direction to our staff and others within the Utilities to ensure we follow all procurement rules, open records, ethical, and transparency best practices,” said Domonique Rodriguez, LCU rate and economic analysis manager. “As a public employee being certified in these different areas is an extra step and individual growth to become a Certified Public Manager. I have received the certification for Procurement Officer and am working towards the Ethics Advocate certification and Certified Public Manager.”

Diana Montoya, LCU rate analyst senior, explained how work and training came together with NM EDGE. “This helped me because I could see how much I knew on certain topics just from the work experience. The classes also reiterated the importance of documentation and transparency.”

LCU can be reached at 575-528-3500 from 8 a.m. - 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. LCU provides services to approximately 100,000 Las Cruces residents and businesses.
