Las Cruces Officer Charged after Accidental Discharge of Firearm

The school resource officer who accidentally discharged his duty-issued firearm Tuesday inside his office at a local middle school has been issued a criminal citation.

Officer Francisco Estrada, who has been placed on administrative desk duty and remains under internal investigation, was charged with one misdemeanor count of prohibited use of a firearm.

About 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 4, Estrada accidentally discharged his duty-issued handgun in his office at Picacho Middle School, striking a wall. No one else was in his office at the time of the incident and no one was struck by the accidental discharge.

Estrada has been employed by LCPD for eight years and has been a school resource officer, or SRO, since August 2015.

The circumstances surrounding the accidental discharge are being investigated by LCPD’s Internal Affairs office.
