Las Cruces Education: Registration open for Camp Innoventure entrepreneurship summer camp

Camp Innoventure, a week-long summer camp focused on inspiring middle school students to create, market and sell their own products, is now accepting registrations for summer 2019 in communities all over New Mexico. The camp, part of the Innoventure suite of entrepreneurship education programs offered by Arrowhead Center at New Mexico State University, has grown beyond Las Cruces to be offered in 11 other communities around the state through support from the Colorado-based Daniels Fund, Wells Fargo, Sandoval Economic Alliance, STEAMing Ahead for Success, Capital Power, EDF Renewable Services and other local sponsors.

Camp Innoventure sessions are being offered in Las Cruces, Sunland Park, Deming, Alamogordo, Silver City, Cobre, Socorro, Roswell, Los Ranchos, Albuquerque, Rio Rancho and Farmington. For information on dates in each location, visit http://arrowheadcenter.nmsu.edu/camp-innoventure.

Each Camp Innoventure session runs about three hours per day. Campers in grades 6-8 spend the first five days learning about starting a business and creating their products, then sell what they’ve made at a local farmers or crafts market in their community. The students receive $25 in seed money for supplies and get to keep any profits they make from their business venture.

“Camp Innoventure gives students a unique opportunity to bring their ideas to life – and make money,” said Innoventure deputy director Lydia Hammond, who oversees the Camp Innoventure program. “We’ve seen students create everything from jewelry businesses to yard décor, and greeting cards to bat houses, among other innovative ideas. We can’t wait to see what this summer will bring.”

Registration for Camp Innoventure is $40 per student, but camp sessions in many communities are being offered at no cost, thanks to local sponsor support. Businesses interested in sponsoring registration fees in their communities can contact Hammond at lh@nmsu.edu.
