Las Cruces & All Of NM: You'll Have To Dial Area Codes Starting Oct. 24

imagebase.net

Starting Oct. 24, all local calls will need to include an area code, before the telephone number.  If you currently dial 555-1212, you will need to add the area code and dial 575-555-1212.

Please begin adding area codes to your contact lists now and use 10-digit numbers to minimize disruptions. This change affects the entire State of New Mexico and includes both 575 and 505 area codes.

The following remain the same:

·         Telephone numbers, including area codes, will not be changed.

·         The cost of phone calls, coverage areas and services will remain the same.  Local calls remain local, even though more digits are dialed.

·         Long distance calls will still follow the format 1+ area code + telephone number.

·         911 will remain the same.

This change is driven by the Federal Communications Commission to enable “988” which will make it easier for Americans in crisis to access the help they need and decrease the stigma surrounding suicide and mental health issues. Calling “988” will route calls to the National Suicide Prevention and Mental Health Crisis Lifeline, starting July 16, 2022. Until then, the National Suicide Prevention and Mental Health Crisis Lifeline can be reached at 1-800-273-TALK (8255).
