Aug 1, 2018

As KRWG has reported on previously, New Jersey-based nuclear equipment company Holtec International is applying for a license from the federal Nuclear Regulatory Commission to build a $2.4 billion consolidated interim storage facility in Lea County between Hobbs and Carlsbad.

If approved, the facility would store up to 10,000 canisters containing 100,000 metric tons of spent uranium fuel from more than 70 nuclear facilities nationwide.

Michael Hernandez interviewed with Holtec International Program Director Ed Mayer about the company's plan to build in New Mexico, canister construction, proposed safety measures, site risk and next steps.
