El Paso forum Sunday to debate plan merging cultural center, main public library

El Paso Public Library

Commentary: The City Council decided to wedge an extremely scaled back version of the Mexican American Cultural Center into the main public library, taking 40 percent of existing library space for the project.

While the city has shown no interest in public discussion about their plan, community leaders firmly believe major moves that impact our city deserve a thorough debate.

As a result, the Mexican American Culture Center organizing group known as MACI, the Social Justice Education Project and Friends of the Library have invited city representatives and Museum and Cultural Affairs representatives to join them at a forum Sunday to discuss the issue.

MACI board member Lily Limón, Social Justice Education Project Director Dr. Oscar Martinez and Friends of the Library president Marsha Labodda will hold a press conference at 1:30 p.m. Sunday to kick off the event.

Their remarks will lead up to a community forum featuring MACI board member and district attorney Jaime Esparza, Friends of the Library member Gretchen Trominskiand and Friends of the Library's Labboda.

City officials have yet to accept an invitation to join the forum.

The event will be from 2:30-4 p.m. Sunday at Maud Sullivan Gallery, El Paso Public Library Downtown, 501 N. Oregon.
