3 men already in prison indicted in Alamogordo double murder

ALAMOGORDO, N.M. (AP) — Authorities say three men already serving prison sentences for other crimes have been indicted in a 2009 double murder in Alamogordo.

An Otero County grand jury has charged 49-year-old Joe D. Chavez, 46-year-old Robert Chavez and 38-year-old Matias Loza each with two counts of first-degree murder.

Prosecutors say the three men are scheduled to be arraigned on Jan. 28 and could be facing life prison terms if convicted.

The Chavez brothers and Loza are accused of killing Max Griego Jr. and Mary Hudson Gutierrez in Alamogordo in July 2009.

According to authorities, the two victims were found shot in the head inside a home and Gutierrez later died of her injuries in a Texas hospital.

Prosecutors say the three suspects were known members of a drug trafficking organization in Arizona.
