Commentary: An article published this week in the Silver City Daily Press entitled RECYCLE NO MAS informed residents that the Silver City recycling program was being reduced to only accepting corrugated cardboard. In the article one of the Silver City Town Councilors was quoted as saying, “Las Cruces and Albuquerque are landfilling nearly all their recyclables. We need to reduce our use.”
Today, South Central Solid Waste Authority Director Patrick Peck responded, saying, "Las Cruces does not landfill it's recyclables; all of our recycling is still being sold and moved to the market. In April alone, Las Cruces recycled 537 tons of material by sending it to Friedman Recycling in El Paso."
“Both Albuquerque and Las Cruces are both working diligently to keep their programs going strong,” stressesSarah Pierpont, Executive Director of the New Mexico Recycling Coalition. “The quote in the Silver City Daily Press that Las Cruces and Albuquerque are landfilling nearly all their recyclables is false.”
Peck continued, "We are sorry to see the stop of Silver City's recycling program, but ours in Las Cruces is running strong in part to the efforts of the entire community making it a success."
