An afternoon of Italian classical music is in store for Las Cruces on Sunday, November 25, when the Vox Vallis Women’s Ensemble plays its second concert of the season, with music of Vivaldi, Corelli and Ottorini Respighi. While the first two composers date from the golden age of Italian Baroque music, the 20th century Respighi composed in an eclectic style that reflects numerous influences. His cantata “Il Tramonto,” is on the program, as well as the ever-popular “Autumn” from Vivaldi’s “Four Seasons” and a concerto grosso by Corelli. Ana Maria Quintero will perform the solo part in "Autumn."
“What I love about ‘Il Tramonto’ is that Respighi draws from so many eras,” said mezzo-soprano Christa Fredrickson, who will perform the solo vocal part in the cantata. “He draws so much from the Baroque era in his music, [and] in this piece, you hear elements of Wagnerian chromaticism, you hear French impressionism, but then there are operatic Puccini-like lines. So it’s a joy to sing because it feels like you’re singing a little bit of everything.”
Fredrickson and Vox Vallis co-founder Jessie O’Hara came to KRWG to talk with Intermezzo host Leora Zeitlin about the music, the ensemble – which has added several musicians since their debut concert in September – and the poetry that underlies both the music in the "Four Seasons" and in "Il Tramonto." The concert takes place on Nov. 25 at 3 p.m. at the Good Samaritan Auditorium.
