Democrats Look To Controlling State House

Democrats took back control of the State House of Representatives yesterday, and in Southern New Mexico many democrats upset Republican incumbents.

Nathan Small who defeated Republican Incumbent Andy Nunez in House District 36 says he’s happy to be a part of new leadership in the house.

“I’m very excited and I hope dearly that we do have different leadership in the House of Representatives,” Small said. “With a more clear focus, bringing ethics and accountability reform so that we can fight the corruption that holds us back.”

Joanne Ferrary defeated Terry McMillan in House District 37 after running against him three times; Ferrary said third times the charm and is excited to get to Santa Fe.

“It is so wonderful, we worked so hard,” Ferrary said. “Canvassing and talking to people at the doors, and learning about their cares and their worries.”

Jeff Steinborn defeated Republican Incumbent Lee Cotter in Senate District 36. He says it’s clear the voters wanted change.

“People are frustrated,” Steinborn said. “They are frustrated with ineffective government, politics, truly putting politics before people. In my case, there’s a lot of support for many of the initiatives I’ve championed, and we worked very hard to show how we are going to continue that work and do great things in the state senate. So, people just made a choice, elections are always about choices and I’m appreciative of the choice they made in my case.”
