The Yellow Wallpaper

The Yellow Wallpaper

Blank Conversations is excited to be collaborating with the on-campus theatre group, Ember Theatre Company to present “The Yellow Wallpaper”, a twenty-minute musical based on the famous short story. Music by Eliza Randall Book and Lyrics by Sam Norman Directed by Eva Cullen Music Directed by Peyton Womble Synopsis: 1890s. The play opens in a large yellow room, in a country mansion on the East Coast. It turns out that Charlotte, a young woman who has just given birth to her first child, is suffering from some kind of postpartum disorder, and she is to be confined here until she recovers. She’s hesitant, but her husband John and sister-in-law Mary are firm: it’s doctor’s orders. She’s not allowed to see her baby. That night, while the rest of the house sleeps, Charlotte is convinced that she sees something moving inside the yellow wall – something that almost looks like a woman. But, the next morning, she dismisses it from her mind and focuses on getting better. The days turn into weeks, the weeks into months; the confinement slowly turns into a prison sentence. Finally driven insane by her forced separation from her baby, Charlotte snaps and attacks her husband when he comes in one day – crowing with the final “realization” that she is the woman in the wall. The production will premiere April 1st-3rd at the Readers Theatre on NMSU campus. All shows start at 7pm.
