Las Cruces City Councilor Gabe Vasquez has announced that he is a candidate for New Mexico's Second Congressional District.

The third district city councilor launched his campaign Wednesday morning.

In a press release, his campaign said, “Gabe has a proven record of fighting for New Mexicans. He has worked to increase the wages of the working class, has brought reinvestment and economic development to underserved communities, has advocated strongly for immigration reform, and has been a champion for our youth and the environment.”

Gabe Vasquez previously worked for New Mexico Democratic U.S. Senator Martin Heinrich and founded Nuestra Tierra Conservation Project, an organization that works to connect border communities to public lands. Vasquez, a NMSU graduate, has also served as Executive Director of the Hispano Chamber of Commerce of Las Cruces.

Vasquez is a first-generation American who was born in El Paso and raised in Ciudad Juárez. He is currently finishing his first term as a Las Cruces City Councilor. Vasquez has already said that he would not seek re-election to the city council.
